May the Fourth Be With You
We can’t think of a better way to celebrate May the 4th than to share some of our favorite welding scenes from Star Wars, arguably one of the most iconic movie series of all time.
And if you really think about it, we work with lightsabers every day, right?
Hey R2, can you weld this for me?
All of the astromech droids in the galaxy carried arc welders, including R2-D2 and BB-8. In Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), R2 gets jumped by some beady-eyed Jawa scavengers on his way to deliver Princess Leia’s famous “Help me, Obi-Wan!” message, and in the process, they weld a metal plate to his side. We’re willing to bet they used welders to make their ion blasters, too.
Later in the movie, during the pivotal battle scene, R2-D2 welds the stabilizer on Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing -- twice -- so that he can go on to destroy the Death Star.

The Wookie School of Welding
In Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Han Solo, Chewbacca and Princess Leia all get a chance to show off their welding skills. When Han stops at the rebel base on Hoth to check on the Millennium Falcon, Chewy is busy welding the ship -- although he does lift his googles long enough to greet-slash-sneer at Han.

In another scene, Han, Chewie and R2 perform emergency welds in order to fix the Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive as Darth Vader is looming, (Han’s welding goggles sold for around $30,000 USD,) and Leia shows us definitively that she’s a welding pro. (It’s a critical skill when you’re flying the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy!)

R2-D2: The Real MVP
Throughout the rest of the series, we learn that R2 thinks of his welder as more than just a tool -- it’s also a handy weapon. He uses it to release Leia from Jabba the Hutt, ward a buzz droid off of Anakin Skywalker’s fighter, and help rescue C3PO from the charming Salacious B. Crumb. (Check out this montage of every time R2D2 saves the day.)
